UNIVERSITY INQUIRY INTO NEEDS

COMMITTEE APPOINTED BY SENATE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 8. The Senate of the University of New Zealand today announced the membership of a committee which will inquire into the future of medical education in the Dominion, and in particular will advise whether a second medical school should be established in Auckland. Members of the committee are Mr G. G. G. Watson, a barrister and solicitor, of Wellington (chairman); Dr. J. Cairney, Director-General of Health; Dr. J. O. Mercer, chairman of the council of the Britisn Medical Association; Mr C. W. Hamann, a member of the Senate, of Christchurch; and Dr. G. A. Currie. Vice-Chancellor of the University. The committee will try to report by the end of this year. It will seek information first in Auckland and also at the Otago Medical School, Dunedin. which it hopes to visit in November. The Senate decided at its recent meeting in Dunedin to set up the committee. The subject arose as a result of a letter which was received from the Auckland Hospital Board. The board explained that its future building programme depended to some extent on whether a medical school would eventually be established in Auckland.

If such a schcfol was to be built, and if it was to be at Tamaki. the future site of Auckland University College, the board might be prepared to consider building a hospital in the same district, said the letter.
