USING THE SQUARE

Sir,—l read with pleasure that the Mayor of Christchurch is to try to rid the Square of public transport. If I were in his place I would put all traffic out of the Square. I suggest that we make a circle of the Square, build a town hall with all the amenities our city will require in the future, such as an opera house, ballroom, ministerial rooms, a suite for our Governor-General and our city fathers, commerce chambers and a chamber for national. conferences, with shops on the ground floor and offices all round the second and third floors. I believe that the vision of our pioneers and “forefathers would not be forsaken if a plan on the line I have mentioned were put into effect by this generation, so that the next centennial generation could look back and say, “What great vision and forethought our pioneers and forefathers had.”—Yours, etc., DREAMER. October 8. 1952.
