SPREYDON BEATS RICHMOND The Canterbury softball season opened on Saturday with a record number of teams taking the field. Many veteran players have been forced into lower grades to make a place for juniors of last The main game at English Park was between Richmond and Spreydon, and up to Richmond’s last innings it looked very one-sided, the score being 6-1 in favour of Spreydon. Richmond rallied and put on four runs with no men out, and their bases loaded. Spreydon managed to keep up the pressure and the game ended in their favour by this narrow margin. R. Pauling for Spreydon batted well, and W. Lee was outstanding in the field, taking several brilliant catches. For Richmond R. Kinley, besides pitching a practically perfect game, batted several runs in. Cther men’s matches resulted:— Senior.—Christchurch 9, Linwood 8. Senior Reserve.—Papanui 8, Avon Royals 5; Spreydon 13, Mclnne& 10; Weedons 18, Ohio 17; Wigram 25, Training College 12. Junior.—Burnham .13, Christchurch 6: Hay’s 32, Linwood 4. Schoolboys.—Christchurch East 19, Y.M.C.A. 11; Richmond 18, P.Y.P.C. 8. Women’s Senior.—Monowai 16, Cardinals 2; Marathon 13, Linwood 12. Intermediate.*—Wigram 17, Linwood 2; State Fire 27. Hagley 13: Monowai 7. Spreydon 0, New Brighton 27, Korowai 7. Junior.—Linwood 15, Haeri Mai 10; Vanguard 26, Southern 11; Opawa 11, Arawa 3; Seagulls 7, Farmers 0.
