Princess Margaret will celebrate her twenty-second birthday on Thursday, August 21. She was born at Glamis Castle, Angus, Scotland, the home of her grandparents. Sir Carl Betendsen and Lady Berendsen (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch from Dunedin yesterday and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel

The Mayor of Rochester, England (Mr A. A. J. Anderson) and Mrs Anderson are visiting Auckland, and on Friday evening were entertained by the Overseas League.

Mr and Mrs W. D. Wakefield, of 65 Union street, New Brighton, recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. They s were married in the Presbyterian Church, Sydenham, by the Rev. Mr Simpson, Mr and Mrs Wakefield have five daughters, nine grandchildren, and one great-grand-son.

Ninteen-year-old Miss Pamela Looker, who has been blind since birth, has joined the typists’ staff of the Hamilton Chief Post Office. She is the first totally blind typist in the Post and Telegraph . Department in New Zealand. There are about 80 blind shorthand writers and typists in the United Kingdom Civil Service. The annual meeting of the Mount Pleasant Nursery Play Centre was held in its new premises in Sumner road. Mrs S. A. Fogg spoke of the work done by Mrs H. Edgar during the formation of the centre, and as president for the last two years. The following officers were elected:— president. Mrs B. Crampton; vicepresidents. Mrs T. Caldwell and Mrs B. Alexander; secretary, Mrs L. F. Luxton; assistant-secretary, Mrs P. Nye; treasurer, Mrs B. Davies; assis-tant-treasurer, Mrs J. Kemptfiorne; committee, Mesdames Morgan, de Thier, Judkins, Jones, Froggat, Rowley and Bennett. The monthly meeting of the North Christchurch Garden Club was held m the Farmers’ Tearooms, when members were entertained by Mesdames Bashford, Hammersley, Mulry, Hodge and Miss Johnson. Mr J. Taylor spoke on seasonal work. Competitions, judged by Mrs N. W. Gale, resulted as follows:—Class A, decorative: Mrs Flavel 1, Mrs Qpartermain 2, Mrs Lake and Mrs McLure 3 equal. Class B: Mrs Dailey 1, Mrs Wilson 2, Miss Ealam 3. Best bloom in garden: Mrs Barker 1, Mrs Wilson 2, Mrs Hammersley 3. Vegetable: Mrs Bashford 1, Mrs Taylor 2, Mrs Kars 3.

Mrs Norman McKenzie, of Whangarei, who is one of the two remaining survivors in the district of the Nova Scotian migration to Waipu, recently celebrated her ninety-ninth birthday. She was visited by many friends and received many congratulatory messages. Mrs McKenzie came to New Zealand from Nova Scotia when seven years of age and has lived in the Whangarei district ever since. Mrs Margaret McFarlane, formerly of Titirangi, Auckland, has left her attractive home, “Dundonald,” to the Presbyterian Church. There are no definite plans for using the house and land, but there is provision in the will for part of it to be used as a rest home for ministers and church workers. The home, which is opposite the School for the Deaf, has frontages on Titirangi road and Atkinson Valley road and adjoins the soldiers’ memorial grounds. It is built of wood, with seven rooms and a magnificent view of both harbours and the city. The section covers an acre of ground which is laid out in gardens, native trees and concrete paths. There is also a ‘ croquet lawn with a pavilion.
