RED CROSS SOCIETY

CHRISTCHURCH SUBCENTRE

There was a record attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Christchurch sub-centre of the Red Cross Society held yesterday at the deanery, Armagh street. The president, Mrs Martin Sullivan, presided and specially welcomed new members. Lady Wigram, president of the North Canterbury centre .of the Red Cross Society, congratulated the sub-branch on the good work done by its sewing circle. “I see every garment that is sent into the depot/’ said Lady Wigram, “and I know the high standard of the work done by your members." The twelfth annual report detailed the activities of the sub-centre during the last year. With 94 members, the sub-centre had helped with the Red Cross annual street appeal and market, its members had visited former servicemen in hospital and elderly women in the Burwood Hospital, and distributed small comforts amongst them, and two members had delivered monthly parcels to four disabled servicemen, living in .their own homes. The sewing circle had continued to meet fortnightly and had made 100 new garments and 72 from secondhand clothing. Gratitude to all helpers ex Prcssed in the report and particular mention is made of Mrs W. S. Mac Gibbon who had lent her house last year for monthly meetings of the sub-centre and whose offer to do the same this year was gratefully accepted. Miss M. Holderness, advisory centre director of Red Cross voluntary aids, gave an informative talk on the Good Neighbours’ scheme, under which meals are served to elderly and infirm persons in their own homes. In a little more than two months, she said. 2000 pints of soup had been made and delivered, and 18 hot meals had been served regularly twice each week for many months. Another branch of the scheme was one which Miss Holderness warmly commended, and for it she asked for helners. This involved visiting the physically unfit in their own homes and giving help in tidying rooms, cooking meals or making tea and doing shopping. There was a great need for this neighbourly service, Miss Holderness said, and she appealed to members to help in this regm-d. Miss N. Enright thanked Miss Holderness for her interesting address.
