ST. DAVID’S DAY CELEBRATIONS
Welsh people from all parts of New Zealand attended the Christchurch Welsh Society’s celebration of St. David’s Day last Saturday. The president (Mr R. Wynne Owen) in his address of welcome, which was given in both Welsh and English, spoke of the meaning of St. David’s Day. Mr Owen conveyed greetings from the Wellington, Auckland and Dunedin Welsh Societies, the good wishes of the Rev. Douglas Hay, and the Overseas Union of Welsh Societies. Mr John Vaughan gave an address on “St. David’s Day far from the Homeland.’’ He pointed out that in coming to New Zealand Welsh people had a great moral obligation to the country which welcomed them as settlers. Celebrations concluded on Sunday evening with a service of song. The speakers were Messrs W. I. Roberts and T. R. Owen and the soloists were Mesdames W. I. Roberts and May Baker.
