CRICKET

THE SEASON’S AVERAGES

With the completion of the match between the West Indies and Wellington, New Zealand’s official programme of firstclass matches has ended for the season. For the first time in many years, no batsman aggregated 500 runs, although most of the leading players had two or three matches against the West Indies as well as four instead of the former three Plunket Shield games. The leading batsman was V. J. Scott (Auckland), who batted with marked success in the two tests against the West Indies, and T. B. Burtt (Canterbury) had another most successful season with his left-arm spin bowling. These players seem certain to win the Redpath Cup and Winsor Cup respectively. In the following main lists, batsmen who have played five innings or more, with an average of mere than 20, and bowlers who have taken five or more wickets at an average cost of 35 runs or fewer, are included:— Batting In.
