TALE OF TWO TANKERS—TOP: The stern section of the Fort Mercer, one of the two American oil tankers which broke in half during a storm off the Massachusetts coast, being towed into Newport harbour, Rhode Island. The bow was sunk. BOTTOM: The Abandoned bow of the other tanker, the Pendleton. The two halves were washed ashore at widely separated points. Both ships were of welded construction and built during the war-time rush.
