HIGH COST OF CORONATION
HEAVY EXPENDITURE EXPECTED
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, February 21. One of the most important of various points raised in discussions on the holding of the Coronation is reported to be the scarcity of labour and raw materials. It is also recalled that the Coronation of King George VI cost in all £50,000,000, though only a small percentage of this figure was for direct official expenditure. Royal Household expenses came to £lOO,OOO extra. The preparation of Westminster Abbey and stands cost £204,000, Municipal expenses were £2.000,000, and those for the armed services £218,000. The remainder of the £50.000,000 is attributed to the personal costs of the participants, including clothing, and sightseers' expenses. It is recalled that In 1937 the Coronation was a boon to trade and it is expected that both the trade and tourist industry will benefit again when the Queen is crowned.
