152 JET FIGHTERS; 48 BOMBERS

(Rec. 10 p.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 21. In the House of Representatives, the Minister of Defence (Mr P. A. McBride) said approval had been given for the production locally of 80 Vampire jet fighters (45 delivered), 48 Canberra jet bombers, 72 Sabre jet fighters, 24 dual Vampires, and 62 basic trainer aircraft. Avon jet engines would be produced in Australia. Additionally, Australia had obtained overseas 12 Lockheed Neptune reconnaissance aircraft, 12 dual Vampires, and two Canberras. He said that flights of jet-propelled pilotless aircraft were expected to take place in the near future. This project had reached,the advanced stage and tests had been made with pilots.
