CITY COUNCIL RATES

LAGGING PAYMENTS REPORTED

Payments of rates collected by the Christchurch City Council so far are behind the amount received at the same time last year. When the treasury department closed on Wednesday afternoon 47.82 per cent, of rates had been paid, compared with 55.49 per cent, at the same time last year. City Council officials yesterday again urged ratepayers to make their payments soon to avoid long waits in the next two weeks. March 6 is the last day on which rates may be paid without incurring the 10 per cent, penalty. The total levy this year is £959,06J, and only £458,700 has been paid. Wednesday’s payment amounted to £13,806. Much bigger daily payments will be necessary if an unusually large number of ratepayers are to avoid the penalty.
