KING PRAYED IN ABBEY

INCIDENT BEFORE CORONATION LONDON, February 17. The late King went alone to Westminster Abbey and knelt for a long time in prayer on the eve of his coronation In 1937. The Rev. Michael Ridley, Rector of the Finchley Parish Church, North London, disclosed this in a sermon at a memorial service to the King today. According to Mr Ridley, the King, on the night of May 11, 1937, telephoned the then Dean of Westminster, the late Dr. Foxley Norris, and said he would like to come to the Abbey where he was to be crowned the next day. , The Dean replied that he would be delighted to receive him, but the King said he wanted to be alone. At his request the Dean arranged for the verger to fee at a certain door at an . agreed time to let the King in. Mr Ridlev added: “The Abbey was empty and the King knelt for a long time alone in the vast church. I believe that episode to he true and , absolutely typical.”
