TRIALS AT NEW BRIGHTON The New Zealand life-saving team selectors, Messis J. Whisker, H. Dickson, and b. B. xUason, were present at tne urst of the trials, held at South Brighton, on Saturday, for the selection of a team to tour Australia in March. P. Garratt (Taylor’s Mistake) was the outstanding penormer. He won the junior surf race, his t.me being nearly 15 seconds faster than the senior race won by P. Mcnally (South Brighton). Former Canteroury representatives in the 1950 New Zealand team in M. Fearon ano McNally (South Brignton) and R. Simmons (New Brighton) put up good perxormances. Yesteruay the first of the Canterbury championsnips was held at South Brighton in the presence of a big crowd. Conditions we.e first class hi tne morning, out by the early afternoon a cool wind marred the proceedings. A difficult channel in front needed every care. There were several close finishes. The senior surf ski rescue, won by D. Stewart (Waimalri), the title-holder, was a photo-finish between the first three place-getters. The final of the junior four-man alarm, won by the previous holders, Sumner, was also very close. New Brighton retained the senior teams title <n the open surf race and also nominated the first three to finish in the individual title. Results:— Junior Surf Race.—P.
