ATHLETICS

MEETING AT RUGBY PARK J. R. CLARKE IN GOOD TRIAL J. R. Clarke, Canterbury’s champion long-distance runner, did a good trial at Rugby Park on Saturday when he outclassed a good field in the six miles handicap. Clarke, who will contest the Canterbury marathon next Saturday and is regarded as a prospect for selection in the Olympic Games team, carried on all through.the race at a steady pace, taking the first mile in smln 14sec. two miles tn lOmin 43.25ec, three miles in ISmin 9sec. and the full journey in 32min 42.65ec. At no stage of the journey did Clarke have the advantage of pacemakers, for as he picked up man after man he quickly took the pace to overhaul the limit men. He had the race to himself over the last three miles, although the two Technical stayers, T. Richards and C. Reece, did their best to make the race interesting. Clarke is a fine stayer, and 'Saturday’s run was a good pipe-opener for more exacting engagements. The mile handicap produced a splendid finish between the High School Old Boys’ representative, I. Columbus, K. E. Williams (Crichton Cobbers), and G. Shaw (Technical). Although he was narrowly beaten, the honours of the race went to Williams, just out of juniors, who conceded starts of 100 yards to Columbus and 120 yards to Shaw. In the early part of the race Williams did not greatly reduce his handicap, and it was not until ♦he last qusirtcr, when some-of the‘runners were feeling the effects of a inerry pace, that he showed his real quality Half way down the straight the last time Williams appeared td have the measure of his onponents. but Columbus, who ran a well-judged race in which he nursed himself discreetlv. had the edge on the junior champion, who had made a long, well-sustained run. The task of giving away 100 yards and having to work «hne was just too much for Williams, who, however, again proved himself a runner of good class when racing over a journey that was too short, for him. Another good exhibition was given by J. C. Daly, of the Marist Club, who won by a good margin after leading the field over the last 6CO yards of a mile and a half race, which he won in 6min sO.3sec. Daly will probably make an attempt on the New Zealand two miles record on February 2, In the junior grade J. T. McDortald (Crichton Cobbers) won over two miles in lOmin 19.7 sec, and his twin brother, J. □. McDonald, won the 880 yards in 2min 7.ssec. K. W. Gatehouse (Technical) established a new Canterbury junior record when he pole-vaulted loft 7jin. Gatehouse held the previous record of 9ft lljin, which he established in 1950. In the details the following abbreviations are used:—T, (Technical), M. Wartst). C.C. (Crichton Cobbers), H. 5.0.8. (High Schoo! Old Boys). C.A.A.C. (Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club). Poly.
