CURIOSITY-ROSCHANA coMBiWiUN Only twq 10s tickets were held on the successful doubles combination of Curiosity and Roschana, which returned £5521 17s for £1 at the Timatu Trotting Club’s meeting oh .Saturday. The tickets write held by Mr H. McGregor, a logging contractor, of RoL leston, and Mr A. Payne, a farmer, of jin a j3bbl of, 13,862 10s tickets oh the Johh Hole Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the double. 113 were invested on Curiosity. .Eighteen of the tickets, were from oft-coyrse sourefes. One of thri on-course tickets was riot redeemed and two were placed oh Roschana. winner of the Kerrytown Handicap. “The first thing. I did when t arrived at the course Wai to take four tickets on Curiosity just out of curiosity;” said Mi- Paynfe after the rate, wheh explaining how he had picked the double.. “I also had eight, tickets on Inquisitive Lady,” he said. Inquisitive Lady, Which finished Second, was the 7, 8 favourite for the race, arid had Sbot|t threfe times as many tickets bn her aS Curiosity. “I spread three of. my tickets on the second leg. Said Mr, Priyrfe, "and I put the fourth on Roschana as she is trained, near Tai Tapu, not far from my farm.” Mr Payne, .a middle-aged man, has had several othfer wirinirig doubles, but none of the previous returns was lai-ge. He took his Sticcess very calmly and appeared most Unperturbed„ while waiting for his cheque for £2760 188 6d to be drawn. , “I. have been following Curiosity for 18 months,” said Mr McGregor, a young married man with three children. “I took six tickets on him and spread them on the second leg. Roscharia Was one of riiy fancies for the race. I have always thbiight she was a good mare, “I have struck a few other doubles,” said Mr McGregor, who was showing signs of nervousness while waiting tor his cheque. “The best of the others was the Star Rosa-Dealer’s Choice doUbje, which paid £1074 9s for £1 at Rangiora about a year ago.” Curiosity, which paid £6l 13s 6d for a win, was the 11, 11 favourite in a field of 13 in .the John Hole Memorial Handicap.. He had not Won since he beat Pretty Dillbn and County Sheriff in the Winter Handicap at Gore in May. 1950. Sintri then he had had £hly three platings , iri. 22 starts. Curiosity is owned by Mr H. L. ClarkRiver, and.trained for him at Winchester by T. H. Gunning. The Jack Potts geldirig has always shown ability, but Gunning has had difficulty getting him into fbrin. Roschana. winner of the second leg, is a grand type of. mare by U. Scott fropi Kohua. She was driven by her trainer,, K Chapman, who races hetin partnership with Mr J. Chapman. She had not won for ffidte than a year, her last success befog in the President's Handicap it Rdngiora in December. 1950. She had been unplaced iri two previous starts this season. bbt she had run useful races. An interesting position would have arisen if Aerogard. If she had won the dividend would have been paid but on the second horse. Btue Print, Brooksby Hall, Grenade and Trbuvlllfe were others In the field with no tickets invested bn them.
Previous Big Dividends was the third,.largest a t a meeting m New Zealand since this form of betting was reintroduced in December. 1949. The New Zealand record totalisafor double divided was posted at the . A Chinesfe labourer, Mr Bong Kee, was the only person to put a ticket on Pierre in the second leg, and he collected the total pobl.
