SOCIAL SERVICE

CHRISTCHURCH PRESBYTERIAN ASSOCIATION Last year the Presbyterian Social Service Association found that it was likely to have about 11 children without a holiday in the country. A short paragraph was inserted in “The Press” and the response was immediate. This year such an appeal is not necessary as all the children in the homes will be given a holiday by country Presbyterians, some going as far afield as Takaka and Westport. Fares for the holidays have been raised by the children of the Sunday schools, who have sold Christmas seals. All the homes will have Christmas parties before the children go away, the superintendent of the association (Mr A. J. McEldowney) reports. Patients in the Mental Hospital are not forgotten, and the many “forgotten” patients who have been adopted by Presbyterian people are already receiving Christmas parcels. Special Christmas services are being conducted by the Presbyterian chaplains at Sunnyside, Paparua Prison, and Burwood Hospital. Sister Marion Campbell, city deaconess, will visit a number of people in their homes, as well as the women’s institutions which she visits regularly during the year.
