BUSH FIRES RAGE IN N.S.W.
HUGE AREA AFFECTED (New Zealand Press Association) (Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 11 More than 1000 men are battling some of the worst brush and forest; fires in the history of New South ■ Wales. The fires stretch intermittently from Mungindi, in the far north, for 120 miles to Coonabarabran. and from Walgett. in the west, 120 miles east to Warialda. Almost in the centre of the area is the Baradine State Forest, where men of the Forestry Commission are fighting a losing battle against the fiercest outbreak which has ever burned in the area. This fire alon a covers an area 50 miles long by 26 miles wide “We feel rather helpless,’’ said one forest fighter. “We have not the equipment and the weather has been against us. It is practically hopeless.” An R.A.A.F. Lincoln bomber is co» operating by spotting fires and dropping marked mans. Farmers on the southern highlands of New South Wales are worried about further sheep losses, as snow covers hundreds of miles of mountain country between Canberra and the Victorian border. The sudden return to wiDter conditions on the highlands has killed more than 60.000 sheep in the last fortnight. Minimum temperatures in the area were as low as 28 degrees yesterday.
