CHINESE LOSE KUMSONG
Allies Take Base In Korea
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) TOKYO, October 23. The Chinese Communists have abandoned their once powerful central Korean base of Kumsong. American tanks drove into the city while United Nation! troops scouted to its outskirts, but as it is still ringed by opposing forces on high ground it is ‘loo hot” for the Allies to occupy. Allied units advancing south-east of Kumsong met little opposition and there was no significant fighting along either the eastern or western fronts. Contact on the central front was light. The Bth Army estimated that it killed 22,000 Communist ground forces and wounded 6000 during the week ended October 19. It also took 1275 prisoners.
