THIRD EXPLOSION IN RUSSIA
Announcement From White House WASHINGTON, October 22. The White House announced to-day a third atomic explosion in Russia. The announcement did not use the word "bomb” as the White House did on October 3 in reporting the explosion of a second “atomic bomb” within the Soviet Union. The Presidential secretary Mr Joseph Short) told reporters to-day: “Another atomic explosion has occurred within the Soviet Union, apparently as part of a test series. Of course, there may be more such explosions from time to time.”.
Mr Short would not say when the new explosion occurred or tell reoorters why he used the word "bomb” in his previous announcement and simply “atomic explosion” to-day. “ft is not in the national interest to say more than I have already said” he declared.
