12,000 New Troops To Arrive ffiee. 9 p.m ) LONDON, October 23. Britain is now pouring troops into the Suez Canal Zone and the Sudan from military commands stretching trom Britain to the island garrison of will total an estimated 12,000 by the time the movenents are complete. The present strength of the British nrrisons in the Canal Zone and the Sudan are secret, but it is believed that they total between 40,000 and is made in London of the J * fart that the task of defending the Canal Zone inevitably weakens Mediterranean garrisons and Britain’s strategic. reserve, but the overhanging threat of a walk-out by the total Egyptian labour force of 60,000 in the Canal Zone means that every precaution must be taken to ensure the conttinued functioning of the zone as an dfectlve military base and command headquarters. The 16th Independent Parachute Brinde has completed its move by air tan Cyprus to the Suez Garrison. The 19th Infantry Brigade is waiting to be flown out from England. In Tripoli the 3rd Battalion of the Grenadier Guards is standing by for ehipment t 0 Suez. In Trieste 600 men of the Ist Battalion, South Lancashire Regiment bearded a troopship taking them to the Sudan. Their transfer, however, was tnsounced before the present crisis biew up. Advanced elements of the 2nd Inftotry Brigade, stationed in Cyprus, lifo started moving to the Canal Zone 3 yesterday and the whole brigade is exited to be shifted there this week.
