DURATION OF WAR
Communist Plan Discussed (Rec. 12.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 27. Opinion in Washington once hopeful of a cease-fire in Korea has swung back to the belief that the Communiats may try to keep the United Nations fighting in Korea indefinitely, says the military analyst of the “New York Times,” Hanson Baldwin. From the Russians’ point of view he says, this probably would be their second moat advantageous course of action. “The first would be to eject us from Korea altogether, a something that may be attempted in an all-out offensive.
"But from the Chinese point of view the prospects of an indefinite war in Korea are less inviting.
"There is good reason to believe that there have been some divergencies of view between Moscow ana Peking
about Korea, and even greater differences between the North Koreans and the Chinese.
“But there is no ground for the belief that these differences have been fundamental enough to result in a rupture. “No independent course of action is possible for North Korea and open divergences now by Communist China would eliminate Russian help and Russian supplies. “For the moment at least these three Communist states must hang together or they will hang separately,” Baldwin says.
“The Reds are ready for peace or war. They will try to get what they want without fighting for it, but their truculent attitude suggests that they will not make major concessions to achieve a cease fire.”
