TAPESTRIES FOR ROYAL VISIT

REPORT ON PROGRESS WITH SCHEME , A report on the progress being made in working the tapestry chairs for Government House, Wellington, in preparation for the Royal tour next year was given by Mrs A. L. B. Nairn, of Wellington, who is organiser for the Government House work party, at a meeting in Christchurch yesterday. The Mayoress (Mrs R. M. Macfarlane) presided. Mrs Nairn, who has toured most of the North Island to review the progress of the work, said she was most impressed with the way in which the women workers were co-operating and the progress being made. A special message of thanks had been sent by Het Excellency, Lady Freyberg, to the women of New Zealand for their ready help with the project, said Mrs Nairn. “Lady Freyberg, who is an authority on needlework, is an encouragement to us all,” she added.

Tapestries for 38 chairs were being worked, Mrs Nairn said. Hokitika and Gore had recently been included in the scheme. The illness of the King had caused some doubts about arrangements for the Royal tour, but it had been decided to continue the working of the tapestries. Mrs Naim asked that the tapestries should be sent to Government House as soon as possible, so that they could be prepared for the upholsterer.
