N.Z. GUNNERS IN ACTION
[N.Z. Army Information Service] KOREA, September 16.
During the last three days the 16th New Zealand Field Regiment has been firing heavily as activity increases on the west central sector. One target yesterday, according to air observers, resulted in an estimated 50 enemy dead.
Throughout last night harassing fire w. s directed against likely enemy positions and this morning a New Zealand battery fired at two targets on enemy-occupied ridges. On one of the ridges the Chinese are so firmly dug in that an air strike was requested. In order to give maximum support to the 28th Brigade, which is taking part in a local advance, the regiment moved north a few miles yesterday from the area it has occupied for more than three months. Meanwhile, the New Zealand engineer detachment, commanded by Second Lieutenant M. Velvin. of Marton, which has been in forward areas for the last month, has been working on approaches to a river crossing near the front line and ferrying in.untry across a swift-flowing river.
Franchot Tone to be Married.—Barbara Payton accepted a bedside proposal from the actor, Franchot Tone yesterday and said they would be married as soon as possible. "He asked me to marry him.” she raid after a visit to the hospital where Mr Tone : s recovering from a beating at the hands of the actor. Tom Neal, who was to have married Miss Payton last Saturday.
