KON-TIKI EXPEDITION
Sir—My purpose in commending Dr. Gilbert Archey’s criticism of the theory that the Polynesians came from South America was to assure the public that the leading students of Polynesian culture history do not accept Heyerdahl’s view. They regard the Kon-tiki raft voyage as providing a possible back door for minor features of Polynesian culture, but continue to regard Indonesia as the front door. It would require more space than these columns allow to explain why. Dr. Maling’s letter indicates that the case against Heyerdahl requires wider publicity, which I propose to provide during a lecture to the Royal Society at an early date.—Yours, etc., DUFF. Director, Canterbury Museum. September 17, 1951.
