INQUIRY HELD AT ASHBURTON

HORSE AND DRIVER DISQUALIFIED

Gay Dene was first to finish in the Bakaia Trot Handicap at the Ashburton County Racing Club's spring meeting on Saturday, but after an inquiry he was disqualified for the race and his trainerdriver, R. J. Jones, was disqualified from race driving for 12 months. The inquiry was opened after Lochella and Direct Link fell and Gay Heritage lost her driver inside the last furlong, but it was adjourned until later in the evening so that evidence could be taken from P. P. Gallagher, who had been admitted to hospital with broken ribs. Gallagher drove Lochella. It was found that Interference to Lochella by Gay Dene had been an error of judgment by Jones, and was not deliberate. With the disqualification of Gay Dene the placings now are: Gallant Satin 1, Queen of Scots 2, Esquire 3.
