CONTRACT BRIDGE

N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS

(New Zealand, Press Association/ AUCKLAND, September 16. The New Zealand contract bridge championships began in Auckland on Saturday, with teams competing from Wellington, Christchurch, Auckland, Palmerston North, and Wanganui. The tournament was opened by the Mayor (Sir John Allum), who remarked on the tremendous growth of contract bridge play in New Zealand. Mr B. C. Bell said that, in his dual capacity of president of the New Zealand Contract Bridge Association and president of the host club, he felt particularly glad that the tournament was so well patronised. There are 92 players participating. At the end of three of the five sessions of play, the following teams are in the lead: Mr B. C. Bell’s team (Auckland), 45 points; Mr C. L. Eastgate's team (Auckland). 42; Mr R. K. Wylie's team (Auckland), 394; Dr. F. C. Hutchison’s team (Wanganui), 37; Mrs J. Keenan’s team (Auckland), 36J; Dr. W. J. Hutchison’s team (Wellington), 35).
