Critic The former Southland pacer, Critic, gave an inglorious display in the Cambridge Handicap at New Brighton.. He was a surprise 2-2 favourite for the event, but failed to flatter his supporters at any stage of the race. He was slow in the early stages, but raced into the lead at the end of half a mile. He was running in badly at this stage, but one furlong further on he started to hang out and allowed Jack's Luck to run through on the inside. He gave C. F. King a difficult drive and broke with just under three furlongs to run, interfering with several horses. Popular Win Although she was the 11-10 favourite and paid £3O 13s for a win, Molly Grattan gained a popular win in the Waimangaroa Handicap at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting on SaturdayTrained at Westport by K. Powell, who races her in partnership with Mr R. Powell, Molly Grattan quickly made up her handicap of 56 yards, and with one round to run she was in fifth place. She moved into second place at the three, and followed Asteroid into the straight. She came on to win full of running from Little 'Slam, the place favourite, which had been, handy throughout.- Safe Deposit did well to get third as he could not get clear until well into the straight. The win favourite, Loyal Scholar, was always handy and finished a fair sixth. Loyal Spring, which was also well supported, was never likely after breaking at the start. Molly Grattan is a seven-year-old mare by Grattan Loyal from Bell Travis, tracing back to imported Berthabell.
