MOUNTAINEERING CLUB’S CHAMPIONSHIPS
Forty members of the Canterbury JJ? u ."!?‘ n £ erln « Cl !s attended ‘he annual ski-ing championships held at the club’s grounds in the Craigieburn valley during the week-end. J. Sampson was the winner of the club championship decided on the slalom and downhill events, ind A. Rattray was the winner of the Novice Cup for first-year ski-ers. The downhill and slalom events were run on Saturday in perfect weather. Snow conditions were excellent, with two inches of powder snow on a hard base. The slalom was held over a 600 feet course, through 28 sets of flags, which was set by Messrs N. Hamilton and T. Newth to an International standard. Sampson, who won the event last year, was again placed first, but second and third positions were filled by younger ski-ers. The results were:—J. Sampson, 100 points, 1; J. Longe, 89 points, 2; R. S. Heney, 78 points. 3. The downhill race was over a course of 1300 feet set to a national standard. The results were:—J. Sampson, 100 points, 1: J. Longe, 89 points, 2; R. S. Heney, 86 points, 3.
Weather and snow conditions were again excellent when the jumping event was held on Sunday. The trophy for this event was modelled by one of the original ski-ing members of the club and is a magnificent piece of work depicting a ski jumper in flight. Though this section of ski-ing is new to club members, some excellent jumps were recorded. The results were:—J. Longe, 44ft, 1; J. N. Hamilton, 32ft, 2; L. Cleveland and F. Edwards, 23ft (equal) 3. It is proposed to hold a Langlauf of cross-country race within the next few week-ends.
