REARMAMENT IN BRITAIN

LORD JO WITT PRAISES T.U.C. VOTE

(New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, September 10. The overwhelming vote by British trade unionists urging that the country should continue with rearmament was warmly praised by Viscount Jowitt, Lord High Chancellor of Britain, in Napier this morning. Lord Jowitt said that Britain’s policy now was what Germany’s had been—“guns before butter”—but this policy had been determined by overwhelming vote.

“This vote for guns before butter is a tremendous tribute, and shows that the country has got guts,” he added. “It shows that the country is still prepared to go on in order to be able to maintain our way and your way of life. Don’t let people run away with the idea that we are down and out, because they would be making the biggest mistake they have ever made. Britain is right on her toes. We have all got to be on our toes to-day, including New Zealand. "The same quality of guts and perseverance that got us through the dark days of the war will get us out now. We have got to have guns before butter, so that we can preserve our freedom for all time to come. It is the only course we can take in the support of liberty and the idea of a free life. If necessary we must risk everything.”
