REFUGEES FROM EUROPE
MORE TO COME TO NEW ZEALAND TOTAL INCREASED TO 4500 (New Zealand Press Association; WELLINGTON. August 6. About 1600 more displaced persons will arrive in New Zealand before the end of the year, bringing the total accepted by the Dominion to more than 4500. This was announced today by the Minister of Immigration (Mr W. Sullivan). The Minister added that 906 of the displaced persons would arrive at Wellington on August 13. The Goya is carrying the draft, which includes a small number of refugees from Greece and Italy. Most come from Central Europe. “Criticism is sometimes voiced against the acceptance of refugees.” said Mr Sullivan, “but New Zealand being a member Government of the International Refugee Organisation, could hardly urge other countries to take them without itself accepting a quota.” He added that the Government was very pleased with the way in which the new settlers had settled down. They had made their presence felt in the Hutt Valley railway electrification scheme, the New Zealand Forest Service, the production of household baths for the country’s building programme, and in many other industries where there had been a serious shortage of labour.
