AUCKLAND, August 3. After warnings had been giv<n by three Magistrates this week, Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., to-day sent Desmond Ralph Clarke, 27, a driver, to gaol for seven days with hard labour for being intoxicated in charge of a car. Clarke pleaded guilty. He lost his licence for a year. The police said Clarke’s car got caught in the bumper of another car in Wakefield street yesterday afternoon. Because of accused’s demeanour the police were called.
Clarke said he had had four beers. Parts of the car were ineffective and no warrant of fitness was carried. Defence counsel said Clarke was married with four young children. Fines imposed for traffic breaches totalled £5.
