OBITUARY
MRS T. H. LOWRY The death has occurred at Havelock North. Hawke’s Bay, of Mrs Helen Caroline Lowry, 0.8. E.. widow of Mr T. H. Lowry, formerly of Okawa. who was known throughout New Zealand as a prominent racehorse owner. Mrs Lowry, who was born in Hawke’s Bay, was a daughter of Mr and Mrs James Watt, and spent all her life in the Dominion. She gained national recognition as a fearless and untiring worker in all spheres of women’s activities. During the 191418 war she provided a hut for the use of soldiers at Etaples. France, and in the last war similar huts were established through Mr and Mrs Lowry’s aid in Egypt and Italy. In organising peace activities of the Red Cross Society in Hawke’s Bay. Mrs Lowrv took a prominent part, and in 1937 she financed a visit of the genera) secretary of the League of Red Cross Societies to New Zealand. For several years she was Dominion president of the society, and only recently at the Dominion conference in Hamilton, phe was re-elected vice-president. The Hastings branch' of the Order of St. John also shared Mrs Lowry’s practical and kindly interest, and in recognition of her work for tne order she was created a Dame of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem She was a former president of the Hastings Women’s Community Club. For her outstanding services to the community Mrs Lowry was awarded the 0.8. E. in 1918. She is survived by three sons—Messrs Thomas Lowry, James Lowry, and Ralph Lowry—and two daughters—Mrs R. Bettington, who, with her husband, recently returned to New Zealand from Sydney, and Mrs G. Chapman. Mr Lowry died in 1944.
