N.Z. EDUCATION SYSTEM

STATE AID TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS OPPOSED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 18. The Auckland Education Board will continue to support New Zealand’s national system of education. The board reaffirmed its policy when it approved a resolution from the Otago Education Board on State aid to private schools. The national system of education, it was stated, was available to all, was backed by the financial resources of the State, guaranteed academic freedom, and gave a maximum of local autonomy. The Otavo board had expressed its strong opposition to the granting of public money to private schools, except for health benefits and free text books. It supported the existing system of voluntary religious instruction in schools, and all efforts to improve its effectiveness.
