PALESTINIAN REFUGEES
N.Z. GOVERNMENT TO GIVE £70,000 ffrew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 4. The Minister of External Affairs (Mr F. W. Doidge) announced to-day that the New Zealand Government had approved a contribution of £75,000 to the Palestine refugee relief and works programme. The plight of the Palestine refugees who were displaced from their homes because of the war in Palestine has been the concern of the United Nations for some time. About 900,000 refugees have been living in tepts and other makeshift accommodation without adequate means of support other than the charity of governments and private organisations. The Palestine Refugee Relief and Works Agency is a United Nations body, whidn has as its object the provision of works in the form of agricultural developments, public utilities, and the like, in addition to mere relief, with a view to resettling the refugees permanently and providing projects of economic value to the countries in the area.
