N.Z. UNIVERSITY BEATS SYDNEY 14 5 WIN IN FINAL GAME OF TOUR (N.Z. Press -Association— Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. June 6. In an unimpressive game at the Universitv oval, New Zealand University defeated Sydney University, 14-5. a t , It was the last match of the tour, which the New Zealand University has completed with all seven matches won, with 240 points scored to 51 registered by its opponents. The Sydney University side, which contained no fewer than 11 Australian representative players, worked much better than last Saturday’s test side, and at times had the New Zealand team bustled. The New Zealanders were well under strength because of injuries, and the back line was badly disorganised through the absence of Gilmour and Jarden. Tanner moved into centre, with Weston and Hotop in the five-eighths positions. The teams were : New Zealand University: Roberts: Sweet, Tanner, Moore: Weston, Hotop; Barter: Frazer, Stewart, Doherty: Clark. Waddell, Hutchinson, Davies: Stuart. Sydney University: McHugh; McGarrity, Solomon, Knibbs; Garner, Tooth; Jacobs; Masters, Holliday, Elliott; Brockhoff, Harvey, Orr, Engel; Spencer. The New Zealand forwards showed up much better on the day, which was cold and overcast, with drizzle setting in in the second half. Clark played a consistently sound game, while Doherty and Frazer worked hard from the outset, and Hutchinson showed in the line-outs. Even so, there were times when the Sydney pack, headed by Brockhoff, showed signs of running them off their feet. Had it not been for a run of injuries early in the second half, the result might have been different.
Tanner was outstanding among the New Zealand backs and Sweet showed well when he had the chance. At full-back, Roberts had a safe pair of hands, but his place-kicking showed up a great weakness of the team. For Sydney the Maori half. Rang! Jacobs, played a splendid game.
Sydney claimed rather more of the ball than did the Australian Universities last Saturday, and Jacobs used it to good purpose. New Zealand applied pressure early and in the first 10 minutes Doherty bulldozed his way over for a try, which Moore converted.
Five minutes later Frazer snapped up the ball from the loose and went over in the corner. Sydney held its own for a long period, which ended when a medley of Sydney backs and forwards stormed the New Zealand line. The ball went from Tooth to Garner and then to Orr, who dummied through and sent Brockhoff on to score. Knibbs converted. At this stage, Sydney appeared to be gaining the advantage, but first Spencer was injured, being replaced by Marwood, and then early in the second half Elliott was carried off. He resumed after 15 minutes, but took no part in the scrums. Later Weston kicked through for Tanner to score, and Sweet went over in the comer. Neither try was converted, and the game ended: New Zealand University 14, Sydney University 5.
