HURDLE RACE AT ASHBURTON

JUDGE’S PLACINGS REVERSED

Silver Spur narrowly beat Pageant to the post in the Winchmore Hack Hurdles at Ashburton on Saturday, but the club’s judicial committee decided that the jijdge\ placings be reversed. The commitee found that Silver Spur, the hurdles winner on the first day of the meeting, interfered with Pageant after jumping the last hurdle. No action was taken against Silver Spur's rider, E. P. Corboy. Silver Spur’s owner-trainer, Mr T. J. L(ster, said he would appeal against the judicial committee’s decision.

Silver Spur ran to the front Inside the first furlong and led past the nine furlongs from Pageant and Paper Raid, which were racing a length clear of Royal Saleve. Cinereous and Front Page were at the head of the others.

Pageant started to close on Silver Spur after passing the half mile, and he was challenging at the last hurdle. Both failed to jump it well, but they had a handy lead and had the finish to themselves. Coxswain, which was well out of his S round for the first mile, finished solidly or third, four lengths back, and six lengths clear of Royal Saleve. Next to finish, was Front Page, and then there was a gap to Lord Dundonald. Win for Elanet The two-year-old Treasure Hunt filly, Elanet, was near or in front running to the straight in the first division of the Trial Stakes, and she ran on well to beat Hunter’s Choice, a two-year-old son of Treasure Hunt, by a length. Hunter's Choice did well to finish as close to the winner as he did, as he was slow away. Old Bailey and Kentucky Girl lost all chance at the start, and Gold Bid lost her rider after a furlong. Ruth’s Praise began smartly from the No. 1 barrier position and shared the pace with Elanet to the straight, where Colony Boy was making up ground ahead of Pyramus, Hahehe, and Hunter’s Choice. Ruth’s Praise was beaten outside the furlong, leaving Elanet with the lead, which she held to the post. Hunter’s Choice beat Hahehe by two lengths for second, and Pyramus was three lengths further back, fourth 1 , just shading Ruth’s Praise.

Won Decisively Paper Royal, which finished seventh in the Lagmhor Stakes on the first day, easily won the second division. He was well placed behind the leaders on the home turn, and over the last furlong he drew right away, to win by five lengths from Gay Scene. Detroit was last away, Gay Scene, Samovar. and Levant being the leaders after a furlong. At the half mile Samovar and Levant were leading Gay Scene and Dandy, with Paper Royal making up ground on the outer. Samovar and Levant weakened near the furlong, and Paper Royal quickly mastered Gay Scene going on to win most decisively. Dandy made up ground for third half a length behind Gay Scene, and Demijour was a length! further back fourth.

Silver Clipper Surprise* Silver Clipper was always prominent in the Fairfield Hack Handicap, and he ran out the race solidly to win by three-quar-ters of a length from Count da Gama, which was in front early in the run home. Silver Clipper was the 14-13 favourite, and he paid £55 0s 6d for a win and £ll 14s 6d for a place. Winning Dancer and Valid were slowest away, and Requite was pacemaking after a furlong from Associate. Silver Clipper, Ember, Nalla's Pride, and Viaduct. Requite was followed to the straight by Count da Gama, Dissenter, and Ryeland. Requite weakened, and Count da Gama was momentarily in front. Silver Clipper and Ulster Queen became more prominent near the furlong, and further on Decameron challenged in the centre of the track.

Silver Clipper reached the front near the half furlong, and won decisively. Count da Gama and Decameron filling the minor places. Valid finished fast for fourth, ahead of Ulster Queen. Passing Parade was sixth, followed by Hue and Cry and Ember.
