AUTUMN MEETING AT ASHBURTON

Favourites Fare Badly ROBIN’S SONG WINS MAIN EVENT Favourites fared badly on the second day of the Ashburton County Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday, five of the nine winners paying double figure dividends on the win machine. The principal event, the Tinwald Handicap, was Won by Robin’s Song, which, after giving trouble at the btart jumped out fairly well from an inside barrier position although he had drawn the No. 15 berth. Well ridden by N. Eastwood, Robin's Song finished well from the middle of the field to beat Detention by half a length. Prince Defaulter, which showed brilliant speed to race round the field into the lead early in the run home, weakened slightly into third place, a length behind Detention. Robin’s Song, which races in the same colours as the good stayer. Royal Tan, those of Mr G. A. Lang, Wellington, was the 8-9 favourite, and he paid £2O 18s 6d for a win and £6 2s fld for a place. On the doubles totalisator Robin’s Song carried only 171 of the 7282 10s tickets, but Greetings, winner of the second leg, the Chatmos Hack Handicap, was solidly supported. The Robin’s Song-Greetings combination paid £B4 15s for £l. Springwater had his first win as a steeplechaser in the Alford Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, in which he j outstayed and outpaced his 10 opponents. A winner over hurdles last year for Mr A. T. Cartwright, Christchurch, Springwater appears to have a bright future in cross-country races. The programme was run in fine, mild weather. The track was cutting out slightly, but was in fair order. There was a good attendance. The totalisator turnover was £38,773 10s, including £3641 on the double, compared with £34,329 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £69,631 as against £67,441 10s last year. Tinwald Handicap Finishing powerfully over the last furlong, Robin's Song won the Tinwald Handicap by half a length frqm the win favourte, .Detention, with the weakening Prince Defaulter a length back, third. Beaugard was last away and Tranbycroft, Addition, Balkls, and Prince Defaulter were also slow. Jolly Sailor, Detention, and Robin’s Song were the leaders in a close running field after a furlong, but there were several changes in the next three furlongs. At the five furlongs Chord and Ambergris were pacemaking ahead of Chasemlht, Ned Kelly, Peridot, Jolly Sailor, Reformed, Detention, Robin's Song, and Prince Defaulter. Ambergris ran into a clear lead near the half mile, where Peridot, Ned Kelly, Chord, Chasemint. Detention, Jolly Sailor, and Prince Defaulter were next. Ambergris was followed round the home turn by Peridot, Chord, Detention, Ned Kelly, and Chasemint. Prince Defaulter then dashed through to the front, but Robin'* Song and Detention ran past him inside the furlong. Robin's Song won nicely by half a length from Detention, and Prince Defaulter beat the fast-finish-ing Travesty for third by a length. Indiana made up ground in the straight to finish fifth ahead of Peridot and Jolly Sailor, which were followed by Responssive, Balkis, and Beaugard. Springwater Win* Steeples Springwater showed too much stamina and speed for hi* opponents in the Alford Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, which Jie won comfortably from Master Mishna, his only challenger in the straight. Laindon tired over the last three furlongs, finishing, third, six lengths behind Master Mishna. I. Thomas, rider of Shank’s Pony, lost hl* iron* at the first fence, and the Nightmarch gelding was pulled off at the brush at the top of the straight. Acme was also pulled up in the straight, and with a round to go Penetration and High Tension were leading from Periwig, Master Mishna, Laindon, Lord Robin, Roman Son, Flying Hawk, and Springwater. Periwig and Penetration led over the log fence near the nine furlongs, where Master Mishna was just ahead of Lain-

don, whith was moving forward Laindon was anon up on terms with Periwig, and near the six furlongs and a half he held a slight lead. This pair led over the fence near the half mile by four lengths from Master Mishna, with throe length* to Springwater. Racing to th* hbine turn Springwater quickly closed on the leaders, and after leading over the last fence he went on to win comfortably by two lengths from Master Mishna. Laindon was six length* back third and three lengths in front of Periwig. Then there was a gap of five length* to Penetration, which was followed in at intervals by Lord Robin. Flying Hawk, Roman Son, and High Tension. Close Finish

Greetings, the 1-2 favourite, took charge early in toe run home in the Chatmos Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double, and just lasted to beat the fastfinishing Symbolic by a nose. On the completion of his stride just' past the post Symbolic was In front of the Hello Peter was In front after half a furlong. but C. T. Wilson eased him in behind Hyflier near the nine furlongs. Wealthy dashed through to the front near the seven furlongs and Fantham was in second place just shading Greetings. Next in the running were Royal Saga, Judicial, Boniface, and Symbolic. Greetings closed on Wealthy and Fantham running to the home turn and in a few strides after straightening up he was in front. At the furlong he appeared to have the race easily won, but over the last 100 yards Symbolic rapidly closed on him and just failed to head him. Manuscript made up ground for third three lengths back, and a length clear of Bright Robin. Royal Saga was fifth ahead of Notable, Boniface, and Fantham.
