All Australia’s burlap requirements may in future be provided by New Guinea’s developing fibre industry, according to Department of Agriculture officials. , „ . ~, Agricultural stations throughout the territories have proved that kenaf, a member of hibiscus family, grows successfully there. Machinery has been purchased .from America, capable of processing fibre froom jute, ramine and sun hemp as well as kenaf. These machines can cultivate and harvest rice as well as process fibres, and will be set up in Papua to treat rotating crops of kenaf and rice. The Department of Agriculture has planted kenaf seed at several farms, and is keeping it under observation for any indication of disease. —Reuter.
