WORLD PRESS INSTITUTE
FORMATION PROPOSED BY U.S. EDITOR
(Rec 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK April 15. An international press institute, aimed at world peace, is being formed, Mr Lester Markel, editor ol the Sunday “New York Times,” announced to-day. Its establishment has been assured by grants from the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations amounting to 270,000 dollars. These funds, plus dues from member newspapers, are expected to finance the institute for a three-year trial. Mr Markel said members must be those who made news and editorial policies. The institute would have headquarters in Switzerland and editors from all free countries would be invited to join. Mr Markel first proposed the institute at a meeting of the American Society of Newspaper Editors two years ago. Its purpose will be safeguarding the freedom of the press, free access to news, free expression of views, and free publication of newspapers. Mr Markel said he hoped it would develop into an organisation with large potentialities as a force for world peace.
