TROTTING ALLUCK WINS AT METHVEN
LEESTON OWNER’S SUCCESS
LAURISTON HANDICAP TO WHITE ANGEL Alluck raced well to win the President’s Handicap, the main event at the Methven Trotting Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. He was a long way back for most of the race, and even at the straight entrance he was well behind. He finished on resolutely to win comfortably. Owned and trained at Leeston by W. J. Doyle, Alluck is a five-year-old gelding by Dillon Hall fiom Lucky Jill, and he was bought last season at a high price. He raced greenly at his early attempts, and at his previous appearance, at Addington last month, he was inclined to run about in the straight. Alluck is a good type and a grand stayer. If he can be induced to race solidly he should develop high-class winning form. Two of the best efforts at the meeting went to the credit of White Angel, winner of the Lauriston Handicap, and Raceaway, winner of the Highbank Handicap No. 1. Both horses should *win in much stronger company. The meeting was held in fine weather before a good attendance. The track was dead, but in splendid order. In a pool of 5380 tickets on the first leg of the double, the Spaxton Handicap, 189 were invested on the winner, Lady Rowan. All the tickets were redeemed, and 40 were placed on the White Angel-Trueleen bracket in the Lauriston Handicap, the succesful combination returning £lll 3s for £l. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £41,515, including £269' on the double, compared with £32.930 on the corresponding day last year. Alluck’s Win The finish oi the President's Handicap was robbed of some interest when Financial, which was hopelessly hemmed in, put a foot through the wheel of the sulky of the tiring Diamed with less than a furlong to run. Financial seemed full of running and if she could have got clear would have been placed. Alluck wfis slow away and he did not make up much ground until the straight was reached. At that stage he was following a big bunch which included Diamed, Goidbox, Financial, Croughtoa, Wrackdale, Bonny Brogue. Barney Grattan and El Supremo. Alluck finished with great dash and he won well.
El Supremo finished very fast for second after having to chang. his course several times in the straight. He should soon win for his new trainer, R. August. Wrackdale came on for third. Dourglo which had been at the rear of the field with a mile to run, ran past the tiring Goidbox to take fourth place. Croughton, the favourite, again broke at the start, and he finished a fair sixth ahead of Bonny Brogue and Barney Grattan. Countermark broke at the start, and he must have been giving the leaders at least half a furlong at one stage. He raced round the field to challenge Wrack, dale and Agnes Grattan in the lead. He could not maintain his run and dropped out before the straight entrance. He is a fine type of pacer. & he could be induced to start correctly, he would be a big stake-winner. White Angel Again White Angel followed up her win at Rangiora the previous week with an equally impressive effort in the Lauriston Handicap. She began very smartly from 12yds, and with a mile to run she Was in third place back on the fence. She had to force her way through in the straight and held on well to beat Josephine by two lengths. White Angel is a four-year-old mare by Light Brigade from a useful performer in Queen Author, the dam also of Quite Game and Belle Potts. Queen Author was a full-sister to Indian Author, the dam of Indian Clipper, Indian Arrow, Lady Indiana and Indian Guide. She is expected to win in much stronger company than she met on Saturday. Josephine was the pacemaker with Chance all the way and she held on to beat the others just as easily as White Angel beat her. Chance, which was havin’ his first start for some time, was a fair third ahead of Greenwich, which broke at the start. Imperial Trust was a fair fifth ahead of Shining Gold, Surewood and Gallant Satin. White Angel’s 2min 43 3-ssec for the mile and a quarter was outstanding on a dead track. First Charge recorded 2min 46 l-ssec, when he won the Richards Memorial.
Favourite Succeeds The First Charge—Harvest Tide bracket was made a strong favourite tor the L. L. Richards Memorial Handicap, and First Charge finished on to hold off Loyal Scott by half a head. First Charge was never further back than fourth, and, when appearing to be beaten, he came again to take a narrow decision. At the straight entrance he was following Treviso, David’s Pride, Isa Lei, and Knightmare, with Loyal Scott. Native Royal, and Tiny Scott handiest of the others First Charge and Loyal Scott had a keen race, First Charge winning narrowly. Isa Lei, which had been handy throughout was a length back third, with half a head to El Supremo, which came with a strong run in the straight. Wrackdale came from a long way back for fifth ahead of Treviso, Velvet Brown, which did not race well, and Gallant Day Harvest Tide, which was bracketed with the winner, could not get a run in the straight or he might have been placed Be came from a long way back with three furlongs to run.
Loyal Scott lost ground at the start, and Barney Grattan. Mystery Dillon, ??^ enta , tor ' G ? 11 « n ‘ Day and Agnes Grattan also met trouble. Monty Jason refused to leave the mark and was always a long way back.
Lady Rowan Surprises Lady Rowan was a little slow at the start of the Spaxton Handicap, but she had moved up to be trailing the pacemaker, Tactics, with a mile to run. She moved up to the leader at the straight entrance and won by three lengths O r.s reen i vl . ch u? rt % d from the second line and met trouble from a breaking horse lns !. de . th , e first 50 yards. He was pushed well back in the field, and he did very well to finish so up. Tactics, favourite began well, and sht was rushed Into the lead with more than a mile and a quarter to run. She and Lady Rowan w ?. r e charge at the straight entrance w J th J Sa P d^ n and Ga - V Heritage next ahead of Queen of Scots and Greenwich. Lady Rowan soon had the measure of ant l th L ,a,ter stru BBled on for third four lengths clear of Clifton Star which had lost a big stretch of ground at the start. Clifton Star will probably win soon. Sandan was a fair fifth ahead Globe” 6 Grattan ' Be,lelia and Supreme Results:—
