SULPHUR SHORTAGE

Sir,—l agree with “Lynford” on organic husbandry, but, until we import sewage sludge from England to complete the organic cycle we must carry on much as we are. Why use sulphur to make sulphuric acid to neutralise lime in rock phosphate, and then have to apply lime to correct the deficiency? Folly isn’t it? Our forefathers found that crushed bone in sizes up to half an inch was sufficiently soluble to show its effects, which lasted for up to 20 years where one ton to the acre was applied. Surely rock phosphate could be hardly less soluble than bone, and surely, the cost of heavy initial dressings of rock phosphate would not be unbearable in these times. What a satisfactory long term investment! Leaching would be negligible, and there would be no trouble with burned seedlings in dry spells—a better proposition even than bulked up “super” as now sold.—Yours, etc., J.A.N. April 12, 1951.
