OPAWA PARK

Sir, —As the reports of, and the comments upon the meeting which wholeheartedly supported the Opawa Park proposal tend to emphasise Councillor Baldwin's attitude, might it be stated that this gentleman, young in experience both as councillor and as a chairman of committee, apparently allowed his feelings of responsibility to weigh too heavily; otherwise, he could hardly have been so emphatic ,when stating that there was no hope of all the area being reserved, as housing plans were being prepared by the council. Just recently plans concerning an implement barn in Hagley Park were abandoned under pressure of public opinion. The council can hardly refuse tp give some consideration to the weight of evidence supporting this proposal. May the council be guided by the action of the Canterbury settlers, who, in their wisdom, reserved Hagley Park. This whole area in Opawa will be none too large in 20 years time.— Yours, etc., , J. W. THOMSON. April 10, 1951.
