TRAMWAYMEN’S WAGES
RISE OF 9D AN HOUR SOUGHT Claims for a wage increase of 9d an hour have been filed by the New Zealand Tramway Employees’ Union. Ine claims will be discussed at a ur the Conciliation Council in Wellington on May 8. The highest rate paid at present is *s. an hour, plus 15 per cent, to operators. When they meet the employers, the union’s representatives will argue that an increase of 9d. is necessary to keep labour in the mdustry. The shortage of operating staff throughout New Zealand is estimated at 385. The union will be represented at the Conciliation Council by the following assessors, selected by a ballot:— Messrs W. B. Richards (Dunedin), W F. Rodgers (Wellington), L. C. J Southon (Christchurch), L. G. Whit--1"?. /New Plymouth), and E. A. Whitlow (Auckland).
