General Marshall Calls For Renewed Support

WASHINGTON, Aprils The Secretary of Defence (General George Marshs 11) to-dky criticised what he called the “let t own” in American public support of the defence programme in the face of the worsening world situation. “Every indication we have from abroad is of ah increasing build-up. It has been noticeable, particularly in the satellite countries. The situation hot Ohly has not changed in the matter of oein<t less tense; it is really more tense than before,” Mid General Marshall. The best the United States could hope for was a period of tension, ra’her than ah all-out world war. He added that the United States Government expected a 10-yeaf period i of tension, yet the American public had already begun to relax. Even if i the West and the Soviet Union caffie to terms, the Americans would be 'perfect fools to relax their military strength Unti] they had evidence of good faith from the Russians.
