HAGLEY PARK
Sir, —It would appear from recent reports that more unnecessary motorcars have been allowed to enter Hagley Park and also that another building is to be erected on the parklands as a sun shelter for a privileged few of the public. Apart from the use of scarce building materials and labour, this latest misuse of public property is just another blow to drive the thin end of the wedge more deeply to cause further destruction of the citizens’ heritage; and I strongly object to the apathetic attitude of the Christchurch City Council toward its responsibility to guard against the loss of parklands by encroachment. Do the councillors intend to grant similar concessions to other clubs in Hagley Park?—Yours, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE. February 14, 1951. [When this letter was referred to the director of parks and reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett), he said: “The only buildings to be erected are two small sun shelters In the croquet area. These will be of great benefit to the croquet players and will not interfere in any way with the public using the park, nor will they in the least detract from the park from the aesthetic point of view.”]
