LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
Sir.—Mr J. R. Smith Is to be congratulated on attaining his place in Fendalton after a life of “really hard work over the last 30 years." In offering himself as a candidate for our City Council he is joining several other civic missionaries who wish to control the destinies of more than 300,000 less hard-working people who do not live in Fendalton or Riccarton. I. for one, do not wish to be "converted" by these outsiders and suggest to them that if they wish to assist in local government they should stand for their local councils. As Riccarton Bush, the main reserve in their area, is maintained almost entirely by city ratepayers, I think it is high time they justified some of the independence their people proclaim, and provided some community amenities in their own suburbs.—Yours, etc., „ LAZY HEATHEN. November 9, 1950.
