FAREWELL TO VICAR
REV. C. E. B. MUSCHAMP, OF ST. MICHAEL’S
The Rev. C. E. B. Muschamp (Bishop-elect of Kalgoorlie), Mrs Muschamp. and members of their family were bidden farewell by parishioners and friends of St. Michael’s parish at a social gathering in the Caledonian Hall last evening. A tribute to the work accomplished by Mr Muschamp during his 13-year incumbency at St. Michael’s wasbald by the vicar's warden (Mr S. R. Cuming), who presided. Mr Cuming read a message from a former vicar. Archbishop Averill, who regretted that he and Mrs Averill were "unable to be present on account of distance and old age.” On behalf of the parishioners, the people’s warden (Mr A. Heald) presented the vicar with a cheque for £2OO. Presentations were also made to Mrs Muschamp and members of the family, including Midshipman Michael Muschamp, who arrived in Christchurch by air yesterday on leave from H.M.S. Jamaica, in which he saw service in the Korean War.
The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. A. K. Warren), deputising for Archbishop West-Watson, said that his brother clergy had wished to give the Bishop-elect a pectoral cross, out, as a cross was being presented by others and was coming out from England. they had decided to give an episcopal ring. The ring, with greenstone inset, was being made at the School of Art. The Dean handed Mr Muschamp a cheque to cover the cost of the ring and other personal requirements. The presentation of an inscribed silver entree dish was made by Mr J. A. Wicks on behalf of the St. Michael's Church Day School Old Pupils' Association. Mr Wicks is the association's first president. Other speakers were the Ven. Archdeacon F. N. Taylor, honorary assistant priest at St. Michael's; the Rev. A. A. Brash, secretary of the National Council of Churches; Mr E. C. Chamglon, chancellor of the diocese: Miss . J. M. Cardale, representing the women of the parish and women’s organisations; and Mr F. Price, organist and choirmaster. "The really important thing about bishops is that they should primarily be priests, and I will endeavour never to forget that,” said Mr Muschamp in returning thanks. Mr and Mrs Muschamp and their children will leave for Australia next week. The new Bishop will be consecrated in the Perth Cathedral on December 21, and he will be enthroned In the Kalgoorlie Cathedral on Christmas Eve.
