WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
Burnham.—An interesting lecture on the moulding of pottery was given by Mr Southgate, who was the guest speaker at the November meeting of the Burnham Women’s Institute. A competition arranged for the afternoon for a homemade Christmas present was won by Mrs Milne, with Miss Wright second. Monthly competitions resulted as follows; large bloom. Mrs J. J. Scott 1, Mrs G. Parker 2, Mrs A. W. Scott 3; small bloom, Miss J. Chamberlain 1. Mrs T. Parker 2, Mrs A. W. Scott 3- cluster, Miss Chamberlain 1, Mrs A. W. Scott 2, Mrs J. J. Scott 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Scott, Williams, and James. Kaiapoi.— Arrangements for the catering at the local centennial celebrations to be held in the Kaiapoi Park next Saturday were made at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi Women's Institute. Mrs Barnard presided. Members decided to continue to support the sponsored child for a further year. Mrs Topp, of Sefton, was the speaker for the afternoon. Competitions for the month resulted as follows:—large bloom. Mrs Arthur 1. Mrs Hyde 2, Mrs Clarke and Miss Pearce (equal) 3; large snike, Mrs Hirst 1, Mrs Hopkins 2, Miss Pearce 3; small spike, Mrs Ching 1. Mrs Hopkins 2, Mrs M. Williams and Mrs Davis (equal) 3; jar of anemones, Mrs Hyde 1, Mrs Clarke 2, Mrs Wheeler 3: six stalks of polyanthus, Mrs Williams 1, Mrs Davis 2, Mrs Clarke 3; girdle scones, Mrs Tourell 1, Mrs Collister 2. Mrs Clarke 3; bottle of pears, Mrs Tourell 1, Mrs Skinner 2, Mrs Clarke 3. The monthly trophy was won by Mrs Craze.
