GAY BELWIN BEATS HIGHLAND KILT

Awadale took the lead with nine furlongs to run in the Canterbury Handicap at Addington yesterday, and he just held on long enough to beat Good Review by a nose.’ Culture, which did not receive a favourable run, finished well for third, a length and a half back. Young Charles, an even-money favourite, made a good beginning, but broke soon after. Fortuna, Culture, Fabric Silk, and Copper Trail also made mistakes. Chedw’orth Hall was first out, but at the end of four furlongs Culture went round the field into the lead. He was followed by Chedworth Hall, Awadale, Beckleigh Copper Trail, Victory Dale, and Fortuna, with Young Charles in the rear. After another four furlongs Awadale took control, but otherwise there was little change in the order. Good Review went round the field with four furlongs to run, and he followed Awadale into the straight, with Culture. Fortuna, and Victory Dale*close up. Good Review finished well, but just failed to catch Awadale. Culture was third, with Young Charles a head back fourth ahead of Fortuna. Fabric Silk, Right Royal, and Beckleigh. 4 Victory Dale broke with a furlong to run. interfering with Ada Scott, which lost her driver, T. H. Gunning. Empire Handicap The consistent Parawa Derby was always close to the leaders in the Empire Handicap, and he came on In the final furlong to win well from Zulu. Mobile Globe, On Approval. Trustee, and British Machine gave ground at the start. Bonny Scott made the early .running, but at the end of six furlongs Dragoman went on in the lead from Bonny Scott, Zulu. Parawa Derby, Prince Hall, Gay Knight, Trustee, County Antrim, and British Machine. Dragoman was shading Zulu turning into the straight where Prince Hall, Parawa Derby, Bonny Scott and Gay Knight were handiest of the others. Parawa Derby got clear inside the last furlong and he finished well to hold off Zulu, which should be improved by the race. Dragoman held on for third ahead of Gay Knight. Trustee was a close fifth with Mobile Globe, British Machine, Prince Hall, County Antrim and Indigo in line with him. There was not much pace on over the early stages and this allowed the favourite. Moblie Globe, which had lost at least 100 yards, to get within striking distance of the leaders. Spring Handicap Gay Belwin recorded an outstanding effort to beat the odds on favourite, Highland Kilt, in the Spring Handicap. He was in ninth place passing the half-mile, and he came with a great run to catch Highland Kilt, which had looked all over the winner 100 yards from the post, right on the line. Gay Belwin. Sure Money. Bold Salute, Bashaw, and Belshazzar broke at the start or early in the running. Lillian Mac was first out, and she set a hot pace. She was followed with a.mile to run by Highland Kilt. Casameter, Two Step, Signal Light, Belshazzar, Casameter, Java, and Swanee River. Gay Belwin had made up some ground passing the half-mile, but he was still well out of his ground. Lillian Mac was first into the straight, closely attended by Highland Kilt, Casameter, Two Step, Gay Belwin (wide out), and Swanee River. R. Young brought Gay Belwin very wide, and he finished too well for Highland Kilt. Two Step ran a sound race for third, with two lengths to Casameter. which just shaded Swanee River and Lillian Mac. Endowed and Sure Harvest wer? next. Java broke with three furlongs to run. Two Step’s time of 3min 28 4-ssec was l-ssec outside Fantom’s New Zealand record for the distance, and he will only need to reproduce that form to win a race at the meeting. Introductory Handicap Blue Mist received a perfect trail in about third place until the three-furlong post, when she took the lead in the Introductory Handicap, and she came on to win well from Red Emperor, which had always been handy. Coliseum and Ikaroa lost all chance at the start, and Hall Ace. Aqua Lady, Bull’s Eye, Great Wonder, and Laureldale gave ground Springbok and Red Emperor were the first to show out, and they were followed by Admiral Peterson. Blue Mist, Pimpernel, Walnut Hall, and Carisbrook. Walnut Hall took the lead at the end of half a mile, otherwise there was little change in the order. Ben’s Son moved up fast with half a mile to run, and he followed Blue Mist into the straight. Then came Walnut Hall, Red Emperor. Carisbrook, Springbok, and Goldina. Blue Mist finished on solidly to hold off Red Emperor by half a length. Ben’s Son was a length back third with two lengths to Springbok, whidh broke just short of the post. Goldina was close up, fifth, ahead of Bull’s Eye, Aqua Lady, Walnut Hall, Laureldale, and Hall Ace. » Final Handicap Victory Song was never further back than fifth in the Final Handicap, and she came on to win easily by three lengths from the pacemaker, Fillmore, to provide F. G. Holmes with his second winner for the day. Josedale Audubon, Allanah, Lady Mavourneen, Sandy Ridge, and Perpetua broke at the start, and Red Anthony and Soangetaha, the warm favourite. were slow. Fillmore was the early leader from Peggydale. Almeta, Victory Song, Doris Grattan, and Keymaster. Bull’s Eye moved up to be handy to the leaders after half a mile, while Josedale Audubon also made up ground. Fillmore was first into the straight from Peggydale, Almeta. Victory Song, and Doris Grattan. Victory Song finished full of runninß to beat Fillmore by three lengths. Gay Note was a head back third ahead of Scotch Drift, which finished very fast from the back.
