TROTTING CUP TO CHAMFER

Field Outclassed Over

Final Furlong

DICTATION WINS SOCKBURN SPRINT

Chamfer, the youngest horse in the field, and a warm favourite, received a perfect run in the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington yesterday and he came on over the final 150 yards to beat Plunder Bar, Single Direct, Lady Averil, and Attack in convincing style. He was well handled by his trainer, M. Holmes, and his win brought his stake earnings to £16,175 for Mr D. McFarlane, of Christchurch, who races him on lease from the Gore studmaster, Mr G. Youngson.

The racing was held before a crowd estimated at 26,000 and the cup was the first to be held on a week day since Josedale Grattan won the race in 1941. Conditions overhead and underfoot were perfect, and the track was very fast.

The totalisator investments amounted to £211,977, including £15.278 on the double, a record for a trotting meeting in New Zealand. Last year, when the cup was run on a Saturday before a crowd of 32,000 the investments amounted to £211,293. Pre-race betting was held on the cup and investments before the main totalisator opened on the race were £14,780. The total betting on the race was £40,203 10s, against £40,717 10s last year.

In a pool of 30,556 tickets on the first leg of the double, the .Canterbury Handicap, Young Charles carried 13,429, and 3641 were invested on the winner, Awadale. Twelve tickets were not redeemed in the second leg, the Empire Handicap, and 798 tickets were invested on the winner, Parawa Derby, the combination returning £3l 12s 6d for £l.

Chamfer, which qualified for the .*up at Auckland on October 23, is a plainlooking gelding by Diilon Hall, the leading sire last season, from Rus ic Maid, by Rey de Oro from Coun'.y Belle, by Wildmoor from Bonnie Bell” by Lincoln Yet from an Arab mare. Rustic Maid has proved one of the greatest mares in the Stud Book. S,ie was foaled in 1931 and retired to tne stud in 1935. Since then 10 of her progeny have raced and all of them have been returned winners. Their stake earnings now amount to more than £35.000. Most of Rustic Maid's progeny have shown their best form over shorter distances than two miles. Highland Scott, which won more than £5OOO m stakes, was the first of her stock to race. His successes included the Great Northern Trotting Stakes and the Timaru Nursery Stakes. The most successful of the remainder of her progeny have been Scott sh Lady (Riccarton Stakes and New Zei land Derby), Slavonic (New Zealand Sapling Stakes, Wellington Stakes, and Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes) Free Fight (New Zealand Derby, Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes, and Addington Autumn Stakes) Chanver numbered the Timaru Nursery Stakes New Zealand Metropolitan Challenge. Stakes and the Great Northern Trot ting Derby among his successes as a juvenile. Country Belle, the dam of Rustic Maid, was a good performer with a two-mile record of 4min 22 4-5 - - Bred and raced by Mr W. J. Moria d. of Riccarton, Country Belle left go<>u winners in Countryman (2min 19 2-ssec), Gold Country <2min 39 4-ssp ) and Escapade (4min 27 l-ssec at the trotting gait). Escapade is also tne dam of winners in Intrigue, Diversijn Milestone, Tall Timber, Flying Tam o’Shanter and Suoer Scotch. Chamfer is the first Southland-bred horse to win the cup since Cathedral Chimes was successful in 1916. The only other cup winner produced in that province has been Winsoon, which was successful in 1914. Convincing Win Chamfer’s win- was too convincing for any excuses to be made for the remainder field. • The second favourite, gough s Pride, was never a possibility. She made up some ground approaching the final four furlongs, but she drifted soon after, being one of the last to reach the post. Checkmate was also solidly supported. He was handy after one mile and a quarter, but a break at the four- , T? g .. P° st 0051 him an y chance he might have had. He looked to be well beaten at the time. Plunder Bar. which had finished second to Highland Fling in 1948, again ran an honest race. He made the pace over the final mile, but be could not withstand Chamfer’s final sprint. Single Direct recorded a fine effort from 48 yarts. He made up his handicap gradually and he received a good run over ths final six furlongs. He should be hard to beat again in the free-for-all event r Globe Direct, which was bracketed with Chamfer, was one of the first horses beaten. He took the lead after two furlongs, and from then on he received a good run until he started to drift with six furlongs to run. Attack ran his usual honest race. He was well back early, but he ran on solidly over the last four furlongs to finish a close fifth. He will parade in good order for his other engagements at the meeting. Lady Averil was never far from the leaders, and she finished very fast wide out on the Arack to take fourth place from Attack, without threatening the three horses in front of her. The remainder of the field was well beaten. There was not much pace in the middle stages. "Hie first mile required 2min 9 3-ssec, the mile and a half 3min 14 £-ssec, and the last four furlongs Imin 2 4-ssec. Chamfer's last four would have been slightly better, as he was giving the leaders about three lengths at that stage. New Zealand Trotting Cup Checkmate, Single Direct, Dundee Sandy, and Navigate were a little slow to move at the start of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, while Doctor Ted broke up. Gantree and Congo Song began best, and when the field had settled down they were showing the way to Chamfer, Lady Averil, Navigate Globe Direct, which had begun very fast from 36 yards, Gough’s Pride, Checkmate, 'Attack, and Plunder Bar. with a gap to Dundee Sandy and Single Direct and another break to Doctor Ted. Globe Direct moved through to the lead at the end of three furlongs, but a furlong further on Gantree again took over the running. He was followed into the back by Globe Direct, Plunder Bar. Checkmate. Congo Song, Chamfer, Navigate, Lady'Averil. and Attack. Gantree steadied the field down, and approaching the mile post Plunder Bar took over the role of pacemaker. He led past the stands with a round to go from Gantree, Single Direct, Globe Direct, which had had enough, Chamfer, Checkmate, Congo Song, which was net receiving a good run on the rails. Lady Averil. Gough’s Pride. Attack, Dundee Sandy. Navigate, and Doctor Ted. which had joined- the back of the bunch. Globe Direct fell back to last passing the four furlongs, and Checkmate b’Oke. Chamfer was three lengths behind Plunder Bar, Single Direct, and Gantree at this stage, but he had moved uo to be a etae third to Plunder Bar and Single Direct turning for horde. They were followed by Gantree. Lady Averil. Attack, which was making up ground. NaVlgate, Doctor Ted, and Dundee Sandy. M. Holmes brought Chamfer out at the furlong poet and he soon settled the issue, winning by three lengths from Plunder Bar. Single Direct was a head back, third, with two lengths to Lady Averil. Attack was fifth, followed at intervals by Gantree and Navigate, with Congo Dundee Sandy, and Doctor Ted in line, and a long way back to Cheekmate and Gough’s Pride. Globe Direct was pulled up before the post. Sock burn Sprint Dictation established a New Zealand record for one mile and a quarter when be recorded 2min 28 3-ssec in winning the feockburn Sprint. The previous winning record was 2m tn 40 3-ssec. established by Jimmy Scott in 1949 The race was a disappointing spectacle, as the eany leaders broke, leaving Dictation in the : lead. The majority of the other runvers also made mistakes. Fantom and Mine Host were the first to show out. but after *wo furlonps they both broke. Jimmv Dillon, which wa« trotting them, also broke, and Dictation went on to lead past the stands from Single Task Keen Blade, Ripcord. Acclamation, Jamon’s Quest, and Tatsydale. Dictation put a break on the field approaching the four furlongs, and into the straight he was travelling easily three lengths clear of Single Task, with two lengths to Ripcord, four to Acclamation, gpd another break to Tatsydale. notation always had the upper hand and it was only on sufferance that RiPeord got within three lengths of him. Single Task was two lengths beck, third, eight lengths clear of her bracketed mate Acclamation. Tatsydale was fifth, with breaks to Kten Blade and Barrier Reef. Adorian. Springfield Globe to the speedy Mo™ 3oo showed too mudi speed for the three-year-olds m the Riccarton Stakes, and he won by two lengths from First Victory. The favourite bracket. Irish Orator and Dealer s Choice,

finished fourth and fifth respectively, while Vivanti broke with three furlongs to run.

Courser and Adorian were the early leaders from Kapeen, Dealer’s Choice, First Victory, Irish Orator, Johnny Globe, and Vivanti. Prince Charming, which- had been slow away, moved up to third position passing the half-mile. Adorian led Prince Charming, First Victory, Johnny Globe, Kapeen, Courser, and Dealer’s Choice into the straight. Adorian finished too well for First Victory, while Johnny Globe came home well for third, two lengths away, with a similar distance to Kapeen. Irish Orator, Dealer’s Choice, and Prince Charming were next, with gaps to Pyrites and Vivanti. Regal Parade, Safeguard, Flying Pilot, Dual Flight, and Prince Charming broke at the start, while First Victory and Irish Orator were slow. ’ • Results:— INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, Of £lOOO . 4min 31sec class.
